Islamic Studies, as an interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary subject falling under Social Sciences, is the study about religion and civilization which includes compulsory modules on Islam as a religion and way of life, the Islamic humanities, and anthropological approaches to Islam, Islamic spirituality, contribution of Muslim scientists and scholars to world knowledge and sciences and Islam in the modern world. The course as such attempts to study the whole range of Islamic faith, civilization and culture.  Its main interests include topics such as the socio-economic structure, military, administration, development of various Islamic traditional sciences (Science of Tafsir, Science of Hadith, Islamic Jurisprudence, Ethics and Kalam) and thought, cultural life, cosmology, mysticism, literature and fine arts, and many other aspects of Islamic civilization. It also focuses on dialogue among religions and civilizations and highlights the contemporary issues related to misunderstandings about Islam and Muslims.

The subject Islamic Studies was introduced with the establishment of this college in 2012. Since then it is actively engaged with other departments of the college in imparting education and values among the students of diverse backgrounds. The department offers B.A. General with Islamic Studies as one of the core subjects.

Aims and Objectives of the Department

Ø  To impart theoretical and empirical understanding of the subject to its students;

Ø  To provide a vibrant platform for inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary knowledge

Ø  To contribute significantly towards establishing an inclusive society based on shared values and ideals;

Ø  To encourage students to use the balanced approach of understanding religious texts and social traditions against the patriarchal understanding and interpretations;

Ø  To understand things and ideas from other than Eurocentric worldview and delink the epistemology, worldviews and ideas from the Eurocentric episteme;

Ø  To inculcate among the students both antique and modern perceptions of Islam in a democratic way where freedom of expression, religious accommodation and spirit of multi-culturalism and moral values is taken due care of;

The major learning outcomes of the course

ü  The course pushes students to broaden their understanding of Islam and promote the appreciation of Islamic ethics and code of personal practice.

ü  It prepares students to contribute to multi-religious and multi-cultural environments.

ü  It familiarizes students with the knowledge of multi-disciplinary subjects like Sociology, History, Political Science, Environment Studies, Economics, Religious Studies, Cultural and Regional Studies etc.

ü  The bachelor’s course provides an Islamic knowledge base enabling students of other disciplines to apply their skills from a Muslim perspective and it offers multiple career options after its completion including further study options.

ü  It provides an academic career path in areas such as Islamic Studies, Islamic Theology, Islamic Finance and Islamic Law.

ü  It also gives students an opportunity to make their career in area studies such as West Asian Studies, South Asian Studies, South East Asian Studies and Central Asian Studies.

ü  After successful completion of the course, students can also choose to study Islamic Banking and Finance and make their career in this trending field.

Wande Mataram Special Week

All students are hereby informed that the NSS unit of our College in collaboration with Department of Political Science is organising a Vande Mataram Special Week to celebrate the spirit of patriotism and to honour the cultural heritage of our nation. As part of this program, a special session will be conducted featuring an insightful talk by Dr. Javeed Ahmad Bhat. Interaction of the Worthy Principal with the Faculty Members on the Commencement of New Academic Session

Government Degree College (Women) Kupwara marked the commencement of the new academic session with enthusiasm and a spirit of renewed commitment. On this occasion, the worthy principal convened a meeting with the Permanent and Academic Arrangement faculty members in his office to interact and discuss the roadmap for the upcoming session. During the interaction, he welcomed the faculty and emphasized the importance of maintaining academic excellence, discipline, and a student-centric approach in teaching. He appreciated the dedication and efforts of the staff and encouraged them to work collectively for the overall development of the institution. Various academic matters, including effective teaching strategies, student engagement, and co-curricular activities, were discussed in detail. The faculty members expressed their views, shared suggestions, and assured their full cooperation in achieving the academic goals of the college. National Flag Unfurling Ceremony on 77th Republic Day

A National Flag Unfurling Ceremony was held at Government Degree College (Women), Kupwara at 8:30 a.m. The Principal unfurled the National Flag, followed by the singing of the National anthom. Faculty members, and staff participated in the ceremony, which was conducted in a dignified and patriotic atmosphere.
